Rebased and clean-up #8435 and enabled tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Types created through the C API can provide custom constructors. Constructors are preserved through inheritance, and supported C-level constructors are reported during type slot inspection.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Type creation now works when the selected metaclass has no constructor.
    • C-level constructors receive positional and keyword arguments correctly, and invalid keyword names raise a TypeError.
    • Constructor safety checks now correctly distinguish C-level constructors that share an implementation path.

Walkthrough

The change adds C tp_new slot storage and dispatch, connects Rust constructors to C ABI entry points, and exposes tp_new through the C API. Heap types preserve or inherit C slot tables, and C keyword calls use shared argument conversion.

Changes: C tp_new slot support

Layer / File(s) Summary
C slot contracts and storage
crates/vm/src/types/c_slots.rs, crates/vm/src/types/slot.rs, crates/vm/src/types/mod.rs
The VM adds C tp_new slot types, per-type slot accessors, and static tables that pair Rust slots with C functions.
C/Rust callback conversion
crates/vm/src/types/c_slots.rs, crates/derive-impl/src/pyclass.rs, crates/capi/src/methodobject.rs
The VM converts arguments and results, dispatches tp_new callbacks, and resolves C twins for Rust slots. Generated constructors provide static C slot tables, and C keyword calls use shared argument conversion.
Heap type slot installation and inheritance
crates/vm/src/builtins/type.rs, crates/vm/src/types/slot.rs
Heap types own C slot tables and preserve or inherit them with tp_new. Type construction and safety checks use the selected metaclass and underlying C callback identities.
C API tp_new registration and lookup
crates/capi/src/object/pytype.rs
The C API accepts and reports tp_new callbacks and attaches collected C slots to created types. Two tests are no longer ignored.

Major · Store pyresult_to_ret_ptr errors in the raised-exception slot. · c_slots.rs:143-151

crates/vm/src/types/c_slots.rs:143-151
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Store pyresult_to_ret_ptr errors in the raised-exception slot.

When a C tp_new calls a Rust-backed base tp_new through its C slot, and that constructor returns Err, pyresult_to_ret_ptr stores the error with set_exception. That call writes the handled-exception (exc_info) stack, not the raised-exception slot. The NULL return then reaches ret_ptr_to_pyresult in c_new_trampoline. That function reads only the raised-exception slot, finds it empty, and panics with "Native function returned NULL, but there was no exception set". The original exception is lost.

Suggested fix
 pub(crate) fn pyresult_to_ret_ptr(vm: &VirtualMachine, result: PyResult) -> *mut PyObject {
     match result {
         Ok(obj) => obj.into_raw().as_ptr(),
         Err(exc) => {
-            vm.set_exception(Some(exc));
+            vm.set_raised_exception(Some(exc));
             core::ptr::null_mut()
         }
     }
 }

Review comment at @crates/vm/src/types/c_slots.rs around lines 143 - 151:
Update the error branch in pyresult_to_ret_ptr to store the exception in the
raised-exception slot, so callers receiving NULL can retrieve the original
exception through ret_ptr_to_pyresult.
Minor · Reject a winning metaclass without a new slot. · type.rs:2014-2018

crates/vm/src/builtins/type.rs:2014-2018
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject a winning metaclass without a new slot.

A C-API caller can create a heap subtype of type with Py_TPFLAGS_DISALLOW_INSTANTIATION, then use it as the metaclass of a base type. When type.__new__ selects that metaclass, its new slot is absent. The current branch continues and can create the derived class. CPython raises TypeError instead.

Suggested fix
-                if let Some(ref slot_new) = winner.slots.new.load() {
- // Pass it to the winner

In the metaclass winner branch, reject a winning metaclass whose `new` slot is
absent instead of falling through and creating the derived class. Return a
`TypeError` with the expected “cannot create” message using
`winner.slot_name()`, and preserve the existing call to the slot when present.
