src/mplutils.cpp:17: error: ‘vsprintf’ was not declared ... #183
Install is your standard:
cd matplotlib
(sudo | su) python setup.py install
HOWEVER, you can also set it up to rebuild your install semi-automatically by using this install command instead:
cd matplotlib
(sudo | su) python setupegg.py develop
Then you only have to do the following (most of the time) to automatically update your mpl install from the svn repo dir (matplotlib):
svn update
For more specifics see the link at the top. I actually think that this is MORE favorable than pip.

I also have this problem. I would LOVE to use pip to keep matplotlib up-to-date as ubuntu's repos are generally a release or so behind!
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and here are some more sys info:

Given the lack of activity, and the existence of a changeset near the end
of 2008 that should take care of the vsprintf declaration, I am going to
assume that the problem was that pip was grabbing an out-of-date version.
