Part of #414: mirror Alpine packages, now that git-pkgs/registries#107 is in v0.13.0.

proxy mirror 'pkg:apk/alpine/busybox@1.36.1-r31?arch=x86_64&distro=alpine-3.20.3'
  • The PURL namespace names the upstream.apk repository, alpine by default, which is what syft writes in image SBOMs.
  • distro gives the release (alpine-3.20.3 → v3.20) and arch the architecture. PURLs without either are refused.
  • The package is looked up in the main, then the community APKINDEX.tar.gz of that release, through the registries apk client. Each index is read once per run.
  • The file is cached under {repository}/{release}/{repo}/{arch}/{file}, the key the APK handler uses, so /apk/{name}/... serves it with the upstream down. APKRepositories and APKCacheFilename are shared with the handler for that.
  • Like the handler, the proxy doesn't check the file: the index checksum covers only the control section, and apk checks it on install.
  • Versions aren't listed, so a version is required. Indexes aren't mirrored.

Tested through the mirror and then the APK handler with the upstream closed, plus refusals for missing or bad distro/arch, an unknown repository and a version not in either index. Against dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org: busybox (main, x86_64 and aarch64) and neovim (community) mirrored, then served with 200 by proxy serve with upstream.apk pointing at an unreachable host.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Alpine APK package mirroring by release, architecture, and package version, searching the main and community repositories.
    • Mirrored packages remain available from cache when the upstream source is unavailable. The official Alpine mirror is used by default when no repository is configured.
    • Supports repositories with either APKINDEX or Packages.adb indexes.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid or incomplete package details and unavailable packages are reported as errors; pre-release Alpine distributions are not supported.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified required package details, that indexes are not mirrored, and that package files are verified during installation.

The PURL namespace names the upstream.apk repository, and the distro and
arch qualifiers syft writes give the release and architecture. The package
is looked up in the main and community indexes of that release and cached
under the path the APK handler serves it from.

Walkthrough

This change adds Alpine APK package mirroring. The mirror validates PURL qualifiers, searches Alpine release indexes for the requested package version, and caches matching APK files. It also wires APK upstream configuration and documents and tests the flow.

Changes: Alpine APK mirroring

Layer / File(s) Summary
APK repository configuration and PURL qualifiers
internal/mirror/mirror.go, internal/mirror/source.go, internal/server/mirror_versions.go, internal/server/mirror_fetch_test.go, internal/handler/apk.go
Mirror receives APK upstream configuration. Alpine PURLs include arch and distro qualifiers. APK repository normalization and cache-path construction use shared helpers.
APK lookup and mirror dispatch
internal/mirror/apk.go, internal/mirror/mirror.go
Alpine packages are routed to mirrorAPK. It searches main and then community for an exact version, reuses registry clients for five minutes, and records lookup, fetch, or not-found failures.
APK mirror validation and documentation
internal/server/mirror_apk_test.go, docs/configuration.md
Tests cover index requests, cached package downloads, and invalid or unavailable package PURLs. Documentation describes the required qualifiers, search order, cache path, and APK verification behavior.

Possibly related issues

  • git-pkgs/proxy#414 — The issue identifies missing APK support in proxy mirror; this change adds APK package mirroring from APK indexes.
  • git-pkgs/proxy#132 — This change resolves requested APK versions from Alpine indexes, but does not implement handler-side version filtering.

Possibly related PRs

  • git-pkgs/proxy#626 — Both changes affect APK naming through mirrorTarget. Removing the repository prefix can affect selection of non-default upstream.apk repositories.

Suggested labels: enhancement

Suggested reviewers: pinguinfuss

Merge Risk: Low · up to c3f0c

APK mirroring can fail for valid upstream configuration values with repeated trailing slashes; normalize the URL before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to c3f0c

Alpine mirroring adds upstream index processing and persistent cache writes, but repository selection, package paths, and cache publication retain meaningful controls. No introduced or materially worsened security issue was established. Deployment access controls and some dependency-level assurances remain outside the reviewed evidence.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new producer can populate the shared APK-serving cache and initiate requests using the proxy's network position. Inputs select administrator-configured repository aliases, not arbitrary upstream URLs. The existing mirror API is opt-in and has no authentication gate in the inspected router registration; its deployment-level access restrictions are unknown. The PR does not introduce that API exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The investigated index-to-download path does not establish an attacker-selected host or cache-path escape. The inspected dependency constructs artifact URLs from its selected directory and a filename derived from package name and version, rejecting separators, percent signs, query delimiters, and fragments. The index homepage field is not used as the download URL. This resolves the supplied URL-provenance concern at the inspected source level, without establishing runtime redirect behavior.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Unknown repositories and malformed release or architecture qualifiers fail before index lookup. Exact version matching is required before artifact selection. The HTTP consumer retains traversal checks and the same repository-qualified cache key, preventing the new writer from intentionally collapsing distinct releases or architectures into a filename-only identity.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new writer reuses existing cache transition controls. Storage completes before cache-record publication, configured scan gates precede publication, and failed database recording invokes orphan cleanup handling. Shared fetches release waiters and recheck stored state across repetition, cancellation, and concurrency. These controls are unchanged by the PR; no new failure-containment regression was established.

Anchor the Alpine distro qualifier to the complete release value.

FindStringSubmatch currently accepts alpine-3.20-evil and alpine-3.20.foo. The code then discards the suffix and selects v3.20. Reject these values instead of mirroring a package from a release that the qualifier did not validly identify.

Reject versionless Alpine PURLs before version expansion.

PURLSource.Enumerate currently treats a versionless Alpine PURL as an unversioned package request. The default RegistryVersions client lists all versions, and each result reaches mirrorAPK. This violates the Alpine contract and can mirror every available version instead of refusing the PURL.

Reject the Alpine PURL before the unversioned branch in internal/mirror/source.go.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Normalize all trailing slashes in APK repository URLs.

When an upstream.apk URL ends in two or more slashes, APKRepositories removes only one. mirrorAPK then sends the remaining doubled slash to the APK registry client. A canonical-only upstream can return 404, so the mirror skips both indexes and records the package as unavailable.
