Thanks for adding monitoring support for Trino — the overall structure is solid and consistent with the Spark backend. Found a few issues that need to be fixed before merge.

| from_expression = data_source.get_table_query_string() | ||
| q_ts = f'"{timestamp_field}"' | ||
| sql = f"SELECT MAX({q_ts}) AS max_ts FROM {from_expression} AS _src" |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[P1] Query-backed TrinoSources produce invalid SQL.
get_table_query_string() can return a raw SELECT ... when the source is query-based. Using it bare here generates:
SELECT MAX("ts") AS max_ts FROM SELECT col FROM t AS _srcwhich is invalid. The same problem applies to every FROM {from_expression} AS _src in the monitoring helpers (_trino_sql_numeric_stats, _trino_sql_numeric_histogram, _trino_sql_categorical_stats).
Fix: wrap the expression — FROM ({from_expression}) AS _src — as pull_all_from_table_or_query already does at line 490.

| res = client.execute_query(query) | ||
| rows = res.data or [] | ||
| if not rows: |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[P1] All-null categorical column reports row_count=0, null_count=0.
The main query filters with WHERE col IS NOT NULL then GROUP BY, so an all-null column produces zero result rows. This hits if not rows: return empty_categorical_metric(col_name) which returns row_count=0, null_count=0, null_rate=0.0.
A 100-row all-null column should report row_count=100, null_count=100, null_rate=1.0.
Fix: run the row_count / null_count / unique_count aggregates as a separate query (or a UNION), so the counts are always returned even when the top-N GROUP BY produces no rows.
(Note: the Spark implementation has the same bug — worth fixing in both.)

| upload_pandas_dataframe_to_trino( |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[P1] Drop-then-upload loses the explicit monitoring schema; all-null columns produce invalid DDL.
After DROP TABLE, upload_pandas_dataframe_to_trino infers the schema from the pandas DataFrame via PyArrow. If an optional column like histogram or max_event_timestamp is all-None in the merged DataFrame, PyArrow infers it as null type, which maps to Trino type null (see trino_type_map.py:97) — producing invalid DDL like histogram null.
Fix: either (a) re-use the monitoring DDL template to recreate the table with the correct schema before inserting rows, or (b) explicitly cast column dtypes on the DataFrame before upload (e.g. ensure histogram is object/str, timestamps are datetime64, etc.).
| formated_values = [] | ||
| for row_name, row_value in row.items(): | ||
| if schema[row_name].startswith("timestamp"): | ||
| if _is_nan(row_value): |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[P2] Moving _is_nan() to the top breaks list, tuple, and ndarray values.
np.isnan([1, 2]) does not raise TypeError (which _is_nan catches) — it succeeds and returns array([False, False]). Evaluating that array in if _is_nan(row_value) then raises:
ValueError: The truth value of an array with more than one element is ambiguous.
The original code avoided this because _is_nan was called after the list/ndarray/tuple branches. The reorder is a regression for any DataFrame with container-typed columns.
Fix: either keep the container checks before the NaN check (splicing in the new date/bool branches at the right position), or guard _is_nan to return False early for container types.

||
| try: | ||
| client.execute_query(f"DROP TABLE IF EXISTS {full_table_name}") |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[P2] Non-atomic drop-then-recreate risks total data loss.
If the process crashes (OOM, timeout, network blip) between DROP TABLE (line 647) and upload_pandas_dataframe_to_trino (line 651), the monitoring table is gone and all historical metrics are lost. The same pattern exists in clear_monitoring_baseline (line 745).
Suggestion: consider a rename-swap pattern — write to a staging table, then DROP the original and ALTER TABLE RENAME the staging table — so the old data survives until the new table is fully written. Alternatively, document this as a known limitation of the Trino connector.
|
|
||
| client = _get_trino_client(config=config) | ||
| try: | ||
| results = client.execute_query(f"SELECT * FROM {full_table_name}") |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[P2] SELECT * loads the entire monitoring table into memory.
Both save_monitoring_metrics and clear_monitoring_baseline (line 715) read every row from the monitoring table into a pandas DataFrame to perform an upsert. Monitoring tables grow unboundedly over time — this will eventually OOM the client process.
Suggestion: scope the read with a WHERE on the primary-key columns present in pdf_new (e.g. project_id, feature_view_name, metric_date), or use Trino DELETE + INSERT if the connector supports it, to avoid pulling data that won't participate in the merge.
| client.execute_query( | ||
| f"ALTER TABLE {full_table} ADD COLUMN max_event_timestamp TIMESTAMP" | ||
| ) | ||
| except Exception: |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[P3] Bare except Exception silently swallows real errors.
This catches connection failures, permission errors, and catalog problems — not just "column already exists". The Spark equivalent narrows this to AnalysisException.
Suggestion: catch trino.exceptions.TrinoQueryError and check the error code/message, or at minimum log the exception at DEBUG level. The same applies to the broad except Exception blocks in save_monitoring_metrics (lines 643, 648) and clear_monitoring_baseline (line 717).
| if isinstance(val, (int, float, np.integer, np.floating)): | ||
| return str(val) | ||
| if isinstance(val, (datetime, pd.Timestamp)): | ||
| return f"TIMESTAMP '{val.strftime('%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S.%f')}'" |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[P3] _trino_sql_literal silently drops timezone on tz-aware timestamps.
strftime discards timezone info, so a tz-aware datetime produces a bare TIMESTAMP literal. A value like 2025-01-15 12:00:00+05:30 becomes TIMESTAMP '2025-01-15 12:00:00.000000' — losing the offset.
Suggestion: convert to UTC first (val.astimezone(timezone.utc)) before formatting, or emit TIMESTAMP '...' AT TIME ZONE 'UTC' for tz-aware inputs.

What this PR does / why we need it:
Trino is missing the required endpoints for monitoring data quality... here I believe I've added most of them. I based it on the spark implementation. My familiarity with spark is pretty high -- trino less so.
Which issue(s) this PR fixes:
None?
Checks
git commit -s)Testing Strategy
Misc
I mainly copy and pasted the implementation from spark and then Gemini and I had a bit of fun refactoring that. I leveraged gemini pretty heavily to generate unit tests which I think are fairly exhaustive but I don't know y'all's vibes on that one.
oh the
auth: Optional[...] = Noneis fix to another issue where excluding an auth implementation results in a pydantic error -- I just included that here selfishly
